Pac-Man cornering: the technique that beats faster ghosts
Pac-Man can cut corners and ghosts cannot. Over a board with dozens of turns that asymmetry adds up to a full tile of free distance, and it is the single most important physical skill in the game.

What cornering is
If you push the joystick toward your next turn before Pac-Man reaches the junction, the game begins moving him diagonally toward the new corridor a few pixels early, so he rounds the corner on a short curve rather than a right angle. Ghosts always turn at the exact centre of the tile. Each cornered turn therefore gains Pac-Man a few pixels, and a board has dozens of turns.
Why it matters more on later levels
Through level 20 Pac-Man is already slightly faster than the ghosts (the table is in speed values for every level), so cornering is a bonus. From level 21 the ghosts are faster in a straight line and cornering is the only way to maintain distance; a player who does not corner will be caught in any long chase. Patterns for high levels assume cornering on every turn, as described in pattern play in pacman.
How to do it
- Decide your next turn one corridor ahead.
- Push the stick (or key) toward that direction as soon as you are within about half a tile of the junction. The input is buffered; nothing happens until the opening is reachable.
- Hold it through the turn. Pac-Man curves into the new corridor early.
- Immediately start thinking about the next turn.
On a keyboard, the same idea is "press early and hold". On a phone, swipe slightly before the junction. The games on the mr pacman arcade hub buffer your next direction the same way, so the habit transfers.
Common mistakes
- Diagonal joysticks. An eight-way stick can register a diagonal that the four-way game interprets unpredictably. Originals use four-way sticks for this reason; see pacman arcade cabinet details.
- Pressing too early at a blocked turn. If the direction you press is a wall at the next junction, Pac-Man ignores it; buffered input only works for a reachable opening.
- Reversing instead of cornering. Reversing is instant and sometimes right, but it gives up the ground cornering won.
Cornering plus the no-up zones
Combine cornering with the four corridors where ghosts cannot turn upward (listed in the original pacman maze) and you have the two escape tools that work on every level, independent of patterns and power pellets.

Frequently asked questions
Can ghosts cut corners in Pac-Man?
No. Ghosts always turn at the tile centre, which is why cornering gives Pac-Man an advantage.
How much distance does cornering gain?
A few pixels per turn, adding up to roughly a tile or more over a board.
Does cornering work in the Google Pac-Man doodle?
Yes, the doodle reproduces pre-turn buffering and corner cutting.
