The short answer

Pac-Man came out on 22 May 1980 in Japan, where it was called Puck Man, and in October 1980 in North America under the Pac-Man name through Midway. Every later date you see refers to a port, a sequel or an anniversary.

Why there are two 1980 dates

Namco released the game domestically first, after a location test in the spring. The North American licence went to Midway Manufacturing, which had successfully distributed Namco's Galaxian the year before. Midway needed time to produce cabinets, rework the artwork and rename the game, which is why the US launch came five months later. For most of the world, including Europe, the game arrived via Midway cabinets or local licensees in late 1980 and 1981, so the "October 1980" date is the one most non-Japanese players remember. The naming change itself is explained in meaning of the pacman name.

The dates people get wrong

How long did development take?

Design began in 1979 and the game shipped in May 1980, roughly 17 months of work by a five-person team led by Toru Iwatani. The people and their roles are profiled in the man who designed pacman. The wider story of what happened after launch, including the explosion in the United States, is told in the pacman history from 1980. And if you want to understand why a 1980 design still feels playable, the ghost logic in pacman ghost ai explained is the best place to start before trying the free games on the mr pacman retro arcade hub.
