Mr Pacman vs Ms Pacman: is there really a Mr. Pac-Man?
Search for "Mr Pacman" and you will find pinball tables, cartoon episodes and a lot of confusion. Here is what the name actually refers to, and how the two games people mean by it compare.
The short answer
There has never been an arcade game called Mr. Pac-Man. The original 1980 game is simply Pac-Man; "Mr." was added informally by players after Ms. Pac-Man arrived in 1982. The only official products with "Mr." in the title are Bally's 1982 pinball machine Mr. & Mrs. Pac-Man and a few pieces of 1980s merchandise.
Where "Mr Pacman" comes from
- Retroactive naming. Once Ms. Pac-Man existed, people needed a way to say "the original one". "Mr. Pac-Man" was the natural shorthand, the same way fans say "the original Mario" after sequels.
- The 1982 cartoon. Hanna-Barbera's series made Pac-Man a husband and father, with Ms. Pac-Man as his wife Pepper. Episodes and merchandise occasionally referred to the couple as Mr. and Mrs. Pac-Man. The cartoon's wider cast is in pacman character encyclopedia.
- The pinball table. Bally's Mr. & Mrs. Pac-Man (1982) was a hybrid: a conventional pinball playfield with a small dot-matrix maze mini-game called Pac-Maze. It is the one place the name is official.
- Search habits. Many players type "mr pacman" when they want the classic game or a free browser version, which is why this site, the mr pacman arcade hub, uses the name.

Other things people mean by "Mr Pacman"
- Bootleg cabinets. Some 1980s bootlegs and modern multi-game boards label the original "Mr. Pac-Man" to distinguish it in menus.
- Pac-Man Plus (1982). A Midway variant sometimes mislabelled as a "Mr." version; it is actually a harder remix with new fruit.
- Super Pac-Man and Pac-Man Championship Edition. Official sequels occasionally confused with a "Mr." game because they star the original character.
Why the distinction matters
Scoring, strategy and records differ sharply between the two games. A tip from the original, such as the four-tile ambush rule in ghost targeting logic in pacman, does not hold in Ms. Pac-Man, whose ghosts ignore targeting at random moments.
