How to play Pac-Man: rules, controls and goals explained

One joystick, no buttons, and rules you can learn in a single credit. This is the complete rulebook of the 1980 arcade original, written for first-time players and anyone who wants the details exactly right.

The goal

Each board is a single maze containing 240 small dots and 4 large power pellets. Your job is to eat all 244 while avoiding four ghosts. Clear the maze and the next level begins with the same layout, faster ghosts and shorter power-pellet windows. There is no final boss and no ending; the game continues until you lose your last life or reach the broken 256th board described in the pacman kill screen.

Controls

The arcade cabinet has a four-way joystick and nothing else. Pac-Man moves continuously in the direction he is facing until he hits a wall, and you can "pre-turn" by pushing the stick before a junction: the game remembers the input and turns at the first opening. Experienced players exploit this with cornering, pushing diagonally into a turn so Pac-Man cuts the corner a few pixels early. Modern re-releases map the stick to a d-pad or arrow keys; the free games on the mr pacman free maze games use arrow keys, WASD or swipe.

What everything on the screen does

ElementEffectPoints
Small dotEating slightly slows Pac-Man for a frame; 240 per board10
Power pellet (energizer)Ghosts turn blue and flee; Pac-Man can eat them for a limited time50
Blue ghostReturns to the ghost house as eyes, then re-emerges200, 400, 800, 1,600 in a chain
Fruit / bonus itemAppears under the ghost house twice per board100 to 5,000 by level
Warp tunnelExits one side of the maze and enters the other; ghosts slow down inside—

The complete point breakdown, including per-board maximums, is in pacman points per dot, and the bonus schedule is in pacman fruits by level.

Lives and extra lives

You begin with three lives (operators could set the machine to five). An extra life is awarded at 10,000 points on the default setting, and only once. Touching a ghost that is not blue costs a life and resets Pac-Man and the ghosts to their starting positions, but the dots you have eaten stay eaten.

The ghosts in one paragraph

Blinky (red) chases you directly. Pinky (pink) aims for a spot four tiles ahead of you. Inky (cyan) uses Blinky's position to flank. Clyde (orange) chases until he gets close, then wanders off. Every ghost periodically retreats to its own corner in "scatter" mode, which is your chance to cross the middle of the maze. When you eat a power pellet, all ghosts reverse direction and become edible until the timer expires. Names are explained in pacman ghosts and their nicknames and the full targeting logic in pacman ghost behavior patterns.

Intermissions

After boards 2, 5, 9, 13 and 17 the game plays a short animated cutscene: Pac-Man chased by Blinky, who then returns giant-sized; Blinky snagging his sheet on a nail; and Blinky's torn sheet revealing a worm-like body. They are purely a reward and a breather.

Beginner mistakes to avoid

  1. Eating power pellets as soon as you reach them. Save them for when ghosts are close, because the ghost chain is where big points come from.
  2. Running into dead-end pockets. The maze has no true dead ends, but corridors near the corners trap you if a ghost follows.
  3. Ignoring the tunnels. Ghosts move at under half speed inside them; a tunnel is your best escape when cornered.
  4. Clearing the middle first. Eat the edges while the ghosts are leaving the house, then use scatter windows for the centre.
  5. Panicking when a ghost is behind you. Ghosts cannot reverse on their own except when a mode changes, so a ghost behind you is usually safe to lead.

Once these feel natural, graduate to advanced pacman strategy, which covers patterns and ghost grouping.
