Pac-Man world records: perfect games, fastest runs and high scores
When the maximum score is fixed, the record becomes time. Here is how the arcade original, Ms. Pac-Man and the modern versions are ranked, and who verifies the claims.

Why the record is a time, not a score
Because the arcade original has a mathematical ceiling of 3,333,360 (explained in pacman maximum possible score), every perfect game ties. Record keepers therefore rank perfect games by elapsed time from the first credit to the end of board 256. A faster time means more aggressive patterns, fewer safe waits for ghosts to group, and more risk.
Milestones in the arcade original
- 1982 Early high-score communities document scores past three million, with disputes over whether the final boards were completed.
- 3 July 1999 The first publicly verified perfect game is completed at the Funspot arcade in Weirs Beach, New Hampshire, after roughly six hours.
- 2000s A handful of players from the United States and Canada match the perfect score; attention turns to speed.
- 2009 to 2013 Fastest-perfect-game records fall repeatedly, eventually into the three-hour-thirty-minute range, where they remain within minutes of each other.
- 2018 to 2020 Score-verification controversies in other games lead Twin Galaxies and Guinness to re-examine historic records; the Pac-Man perfect game remains recognised.
Exact times and holder names change as verification bodies review footage, so we list eras rather than claiming a current leader; check the bodies named below for the live table.
Ms. Pac-Man
The sequel has randomised ghost movement and inconsistent late boards, so there is no fixed perfect score. The long-standing recognised record is 933,580 points, set in 2006 on an original cabinet, and it has stood for well over a decade. Why the game resists a perfect run is explained in original pacman versus ms pacman.
Modern versions
- Championship Edition and DX: ranked by score within a timed session; online leaderboards are built into the games.
- Pac-Man 256: ranked by dots eaten in one run; no lives, so the record is a survival score.
- Pac-Man 99: ranked by wins and placements until the servers closed in 2023.
- Google doodle: no official body tracks doodle scores, so claims there are informal.
Who verifies records
| Body | Role |
|---|---|
| Twin Galaxies | The original arcade score registry since 1981; adjudicates submitted video evidence |
| Guinness World Records | Publishes selected records, including the 2005 certification of Pac-Man as the most successful coin-op game |
| Speedrun communities | Track fastest perfect games and category runs with public footage and moderation |
Modern verification requires continuous video of the entire run, cabinet or emulator settings shown on screen, and reviewer agreement. Historic records set before video submission was standard are the ones most often re-examined.
How record players play
The techniques are the same ones described in pacman strategy tips, executed with near-zero variance: cornering on every turn, patterns for each level group, ghost stacking for one-second frightened windows, and deliberate fruit positioning. The last board's mechanics, where the run ends, are described in why pacman ends at 256.
