Pac-Man strategy: twelve proven tips for higher scores
The difference between 20,000 and 200,000 points is not reflexes. It is knowing where the ghosts will be before they get there and making every power pellet pay.

Mindset: score comes from ghosts, not dots
A full board of dots and power pellets is worth 2,600 points. Eating all four ghosts on all four power pellets is worth 12,000. From level 13 the two fruits add another 10,000. So the dots are the chore and the ghosts and fruit are the reward; every tip below follows from that arithmetic, laid out in how pacman points work.
The twelve tips
- Corner early. Push the joystick toward your next turn before you reach it. Pac-Man cuts the corner and gains several pixels on every ghost, which adds up over a board.
- Group the ghosts before a pellet. Lead them in a train by circling a loop near a power pellet, then eat it and reverse into the pack. A 200-400-800-1,600 chain from one pellet is the single biggest swing in the game.
- Never waste a pellet on one ghost. If only Blinky is near, keep running. Power pellets do not respawn.
- Use the first scatter phases. On level 1 the ghosts retreat to their corners for 7 seconds at the start and again after 27 seconds. Clear the centre and the ghost-house surroundings in those windows.
- Clear the bottom-left early. Clyde loiters there because his target flips to the bottom-left corner when he is close to you. Dots left there late become a trap.
- Lead ghosts, do not flee them. Ghosts cannot reverse except on a mode change or a power pellet, so a ghost behind you is harmless until a junction. Keep moving toward open space.
- Exploit the no-up zones. Ghosts cannot turn upward in the two corridors above the ghost house or the two beside Pac-Man's start. Entering those corridors from below and turning up shakes a pursuer.
- Treat tunnels as a reset button. Ghosts move at under half speed in the tunnel; Pac-Man does not slow down. Use it to swap sides when cornered.
- Time the fruit. The first bonus appears after 70 dots, the second after 170, directly below the ghost house, and stays roughly 9 to 10 seconds. From level 13 each is worth 5,000. Plan to be near the centre at those counts. The schedule is in pacman bonus fruit values.
- Respect Cruise Elroy. When Blinky speeds up near the end of a board, stop chasing stragglers near his side and finish the board in one sweep.
- Save a pellet for the finish. Leaving one power pellet near the last cluster of dots gives you a safe way to end the board under pressure.
- Learn one pattern per level group. Patterns are fixed routes that exploit deterministic ghost movement. Levels 1, 2 to 4, 5 to 20 and 21 plus each behave differently, so one route per group covers the whole game. Pattern play is how perfect games are achieved; see pacman maximum possible score.
Difficulty milestones to prepare for
| Level | What changes |
|---|---|
| 2 to 4 | Pac-Man and ghosts speed up; frightened time drops from 6 seconds to 3 |
| 5 | Ghosts reach 95% of max speed; scatter phases shrink to 5 seconds |
| 9 | Frightened time is one second: pellets become escape tools, not point tools |
| 17 and 19 onward | Ghosts never turn blue; power pellets only reverse them |
| 21 onward | Pac-Man slows to 90% while ghosts stay at 95%, so cornering becomes mandatory |
The frightened-time table is in power pellet rules in pacman, and the targeting rules that make patterns possible are in pacman ghost ai explained.
Practising without a cabinet
Any faithful emulation of the arcade ROM works for pattern practice. For reading ghosts rather than memorising routes, the randomly generated mazes on the mr pacman games and guides remove the pattern crutch and force you to apply tips 2, 6 and 8 under pressure.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best strategy for Pac-Man?
Group the ghosts before each power pellet and eat all four in a chain, use scatter windows to clear the centre, and corner at every turn.
What is a Pac-Man pattern?
A fixed route through a board that exploits the deterministic ghost behaviour so the player never needs to react.
Should I eat the power pellet immediately?
No. Save it until at least two ghosts are close so the chain is worth the pellet.
Do ghosts get slower in the tunnel?
Yes, to roughly 40 to 50% of maximum speed depending on the level, while Pac-Man keeps full speed.
When do power pellets stop making ghosts blue?
On level 17 and from level 19 onward the frightened time is zero.
