Your first 50,000 points in Pac-Man: a board-by-board plan

Fifty thousand is the score where Pac-Man stops being a coin-eater and starts being a game you are good at. It needs five boards and some discipline, not reflexes.

The arithmetic

A board is worth 2,600 in dots and pellets, up to 12,000 in ghosts and a fruit bonus that rises by level (the tables are in pacman point values table and pacman fruits by level). Five boards cleared with half their ghost chains and both fruits add up comfortably past 50,000. Five boards cleared with no ghosts at all reach barely 17,000. The plan below is therefore about ghosts.

Board 1: 14,000 is possible

Ghosts are slow and blue for six seconds. Clear the bottom-left before Clyde leaves the house (the exit timing is in pacman ghost house rules), then loop near a corner pellet until three ghosts follow, eat the pellet, reverse and eat the chain. Repeat at the other corners. Both cherries, 200 points, appear at 70 and 170 dots. Target: 10,000 to 14,000 and the extra life.

Board 2: 12,000

Blue time drops to five seconds and ghosts are faster. Chains of three are realistic; chains of four need luck. Strawberries are worth 300 each. Target: 10,000 to 12,000.

Boards 3 and 4: 8,000 each

Four and three seconds of blue. Spend pellets only when two or more ghosts are adjacent, otherwise use them to escape. Oranges pay 500 each, so being near the centre at dots 70 and 170 is now worth more than a ghost. Target: 7,000 to 9,000 per board.

Board 5: survive

Two seconds of blue and ghosts at 95% speed (see pacman and ghost speed table). Chains are mostly over; apples are worth 700 each. Play for the fruit and the clear, and use the tunnels. Target: 5,000 and a finished board.

The three mistakes that end runs

  1. Eating a pellet with one ghost nearby. Walk past it.
  2. Chasing the last few dots near Blinky when he has sped up. Finish them in one sweep from the far side.
  3. Stopping to think. The no-dot timer releases ghosts if you idle.

Beyond 50,000 the game becomes about patterns and survival; the next steps are in advanced pacman strategy. For a low-stakes warm-up, the classic mode on the free mr pacman arcade games starts with the same generous early boards.
