Pac-Man 256 tips: power-ups, dot combos and outrunning the glitch
The endless mobile Pac-Man rewards two things: unbroken dot chains and knowing which ghost type is in front of you. Here is how to turn short runs into long ones.

The scoring engine
Every dot eaten in sequence without a gap raises a combo counter. Reaching 256 consecutive dots triggers an explosion that wipes nearby ghosts and resets the counter; this is the game's homage to the arcade bug explained in the pacman kill screen. Fruit multiplies the points of dots eaten shortly after it. Score therefore comes from planning paths that avoid breaks, not from ghosts.
Power-ups: what to upgrade
- Laser clears a whole corridor ahead and is the most reliable early pick.
- Freeze stops every ghost, perfect for untangling a crowded screen.
- Tornado and Bomb clear ghosts around you; useful when boxed in.
- Magnet and Pac-Men add dots and helpers and extend combos.
Upgrade one or two power-ups fully rather than spreading coins thinly; a maxed Laser lasts long enough to cover the whole screen.
Reading the ghost types
| Ghost | Behaviour | Counter |
|---|---|---|
| Red | Chases directly | Keep moving; it cannot corner faster than you |
| Pink | Moves in one direction until blocked | Pass it on the perpendicular axis |
| Cyan | Patrols a short path | Wait for its turn, then go |
| Orange | Sleeps until approached | Route around it unless you have a power-up |
| Green and grey trains | Move as a chain across corridors | Never enter their corridor; treat them as moving walls |
The original four personalities, which inspired these, are described in how pacman ghosts chase you.
Staying ahead of the glitch
The static wall rises faster the longer you linger, so always prefer upward progress over sideways cleanup. Use power pellets as speed boosts through dense areas rather than as ghost-eating tools. When a screen is empty of dots ahead, move up immediately to generate the next section.
Coins and runs
Coins come from runs and daily rewards; spend them on upgrades, not revives. A revive rarely adds enough to justify the cost compared with a fresh run. The game's history and its contrast with the battle-royale sequel are in pacman 256 and 99 differences, and the free Endless mode on the mr pacman maze game site offers a similar one-life challenge in the browser.
